Stylish Sea Urchin Restaurant near Roppongi Station
UNIHOLIC, also known as the paradise for every sea urchin lover, is located about a minute away from the A4 exit of Roppongi Station on the Hibiya Line. Sea urchin specialty restaurants in Japan are mostly high-class traditional Japanese restaurants, but here at UNIHOLIC, guests can casually enjoy creative sea urchin cuisine at Roppongi's prime location. The stylish interior is decorated with lovely sea urchin motifs, along with a spectacular city view of Roppongi. The sea urchins here are carefully selected from Japan and all around the world, with a focus on domestic products procured from Toyosu Market as well as processors in Nemuro. The restaurant also provides a wide variety of alcoholic drinks that match well with sea urchin.
“UNI dashi based aqua pazza” is UNIHOLIC’s original menu inspired by Aomori's local cuisine, Ichigo-ni, a seafood soup made with fresh sea urchin and abalone. The restaurant only uses the best quality fish purchased from Toyosu Market everyday, mostly sea breams from Ogasawara and Nagasaki. It is recommended to add pasta and risotto at the end to soak up all the umami (1,200 yen/person).
“Luxury UNI and salmon roe cooked in traditional Japanese Nambu ironware” is a luxurious dish in which you can enjoy a handful of fresh sea urchin and salmon roe together with rice cooked with dashi stock. The unique aroma of rice cooked by the traditional Japanese Nambu ironware combined with the bursting flavor of sea urchin and salmon roe, is simply irresistible.
“Ultimate UNI pasta” is a deluxe version of sea urchin pasta, using squid ink pasta and buttery, creamy sauce made with an abundant amount of sea urchin. By adding egg yolk, fresh cream, and cheese in the sauce, it enhances the sweetness of sea urchin for an even richer taste.
“UNIHOLIC’s pride beef steak with UNI” mainly uses Australian Angus Beef’s hanging tender cooked at low temperature, and topped with fresh sea urchin. The creaminess of sea urchin adds an elegant and mellow taste to the steak. The sauce that goes with the dish changes daily. On this day, it was Catalan romesco sauce with nuts and tomato, which is a perfect match to sea urchin.
“3 assorted UNI of the day” is UNIHOLIC's signature menu, serving 3 kinds of sea urchins recommended daily by the restaurant. You can enjoy it with 3 kinds of seasonings: kelp soy sauce, rock salt, and Japanese pepper.
“Grilled snow crab with crab butter and UNI in a shell” is a very popular menu item that has been revived after fervent request. The best way to enjoy the dish is to scoop plenty of the crab butter and sea urchin together with snow crab legs. The flavor of roasted sea urchin and the rich umami of seafood goes well with all kinds of beverages.
“TUMUGI” is a unique Japanese distilled liquor cocktail base created by using the traditional koji technique of Sanwa liquor that is well known in Japan. The sweetness of rice malt matches perfectly with sea urchin, and is very smooth and easy to drink. UNIHOLIC offers 16 kinds of TUMUGI based cocktails, which are also available for all-you-can-drink plans.
“Smoked domestic gin and tonic” is a fresh gin and tonic with 5/8 limes infused in Suntory’s ROKU gin. The Japanese pepper has a tangy effect which matches perfectly with sea urchins.
“Jellied UNI shot” is a kind of savory jelly made with salmon roe, shrimp and kelp marinated cucumber, with fresh sea urchin on top. It is a refreshing appetizer that is especially recommended in summer. The garnish flowers are also edible.
“Salt vanilla UNI ice cream ~UNI chocolate sauce~” is a dessert where crushed sea urchin is kneaded into vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. The flavor of sea urchin adds a subtle linquor-ish note to the dessert.
It is not an exaggeration to say that every little corner here is Instagram-ready. The bare concrete finish compliments to the stylish interior. There is an eye-catching art piece on the wall that has sea urchin written in different languages along with the restaurant name “UNIHOLIC”. The original lighting fixtures and partitions with sea urchin motifs are also interesting elements coherent to the concept. There are 32 seats in total, with counter seats and table seats. There are 6 semi-private seats near the window, where you can enjoy delicious sake and sea urchin cuisine while looking down on the cityscape of Roppongi from the height of the 11th floor. The stylish counter bar is also calming and cozy. The menu also includes English, and staff can also understand English, so foreigners can fully relax and enjoy their time here. As it is a 3-minute walk to Tokyo Midtown and 1 minute walk to the station, it is a great place to stop by casually after shopping and sightseeing around Roppongi.
